Living Issues Movie Review ‘Alive’ When posed with the challenge of reviewing a movie with some sort of ethical dilemma or controversial issue, the first movie that came to mind for me was Alive for a variety of reasons. First of all, not only is the movie based on a true story, but the main controversial events in the movie actually took place which makes the analysis of this movie all the more challenging and much real to think and deal with as a human being. Secondly, in my opinion this movie touches on a few of the main ethical theories we have discussed and learned about in class such as ethical egoism, utilitarianism, and virtue ethics. Egoism can be further broken down into two more categories, psychological egoism and ethical egoism. Psychological egoism is the view that a person is always motivated to act in ones best interest without taking the interest of others into consideration. While ethical egoism is the view that one must always to act on behalf of ones own best interest for self-preservation. Ethical egoism is not as black and white as one may think especially when the idea is being applied to a circumstance like this. A simple example would be when the plane initially crashes. There is complete and utter chaos in the hearts and minds of all of the passengers, but they are all presented with the decision to make sure that they are safe and out of the mess, or to go back and help others which may in fact put themselves in what some could argue unnecessary danger. Then next situation to be looked at is once a head count was taken, each person was posed with the option to search for other survivors or just post up and look out for their best interest. An extreme example of this would be when one of the pilots was found curled up under a coat of a still alive, but very injured women. This is a perfect example to look at because in the mind of the pilot, he needs this jacket or he will certainly freeze to death. The equation is: GDP = C+I+G+NX GDP can help us in interpreting the economic growth of the nation. But there are some serious drawbacks of this measurement (Blanchard and Leigh 2013). Demand pull inflation occurs as a result of excess demand in the economy which cannot be met up by the supply of that period. The very definition itself suggests that for an inflation to occur there are two different criteria that needs to be matched. They are: Increase in the overall level of prices in the economy. The increase is measured through some consecutive period of time. This statement has been disagreed because there may be situations where the price in goods has suddenly increased due to some market distortions (Blanchflower et al. 2014). There may be some warfare in other country due to which the price of goods has increased. Also some natural calamities like drought or flood may have resulted in the rise of the average prices. The curve which shows us the total production of the economys goods and services is known as as aggregate demand curve. They are: Mundell-Fleming effect, Pigou effect and effect on the interest rate as suggested by Keynes (Gali 2013). According to the Mundell-Fleming a decrease in the price-level within the economy is associated with the decrease in the interest rate of the country. This leads to the depreciation of domestic currency and thereby increases the net export of the economy. Net export being a component of AD increases the same. The wealth theory of Pigou suggests that due to a fall in the price level people feel that they have become wealthier as the same amount of money now can fetch them a bigger basket of goods. Thus they demand more goods and thereby this inverse relationship occurs making the curve downward sloping. Keynes theory suggests that a decrease in price level is associated with excessive supply of loanable funds thereby reducing the interest rate and inducing currency depreciation. Again through the systematic method the net export increases increasing AD. Hence the inverse relationship results in the downward curvature. 5. The long run is a situation where none of the factors of production are assumed to be fixed. All of them are variable. The graphical representation of the relationship established between such long run prices and the level of output is known as Long Run Aggregate Supply (LRAS). This curve is vertical in nature. This is because in the long run the potential output of the economy is shown through this curve (Varian 2014). It is assumed that the economy is in its full employment stage and it cannot produce any more output by any other combination of the factors of production. The figure below shows the vertical LRAS. Lung Cancer "Lung cancer is an uncontrolled, extremely deadly division of cells in the lung" (World Book, "Lung Cancer"). The two major types of lung cancer include small and non-small cell. Many different risk factors contribute to lung cancer. There are numerous symptoms that are difficult to detect in the early stages of lung cancer. Doctors use special machines to detect the severity of each stage. Treatments and cures differ in each individual case. Lung cancer is a huge problem because it is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women (Microsoft, "Lung Cancer"). Both small cell and non-small cell lung cancer affect different types of cells in the lung and spread in different ways. Small cell lung cancer is limited to a section of the chest known as the hemithorax and regional lymph nodes (World Book, "Lung Cancer"). Small cell lung cancer usually exists early and spreads out abruptly (Virtual Hospital, 3/23/99). Non-small cell lung cancer is first confined to the lung, then spreads throughout the chest (MSKCC, "Lung Cancer"). Small cell lung cancer spreads quickly (World Book, "Lung Cancer"). In the United States 85 to 90 percent of all lung cancer cases are related to smoking. Cigarette smoking is the main cause of lung cancer (Scientific American, "Lung Cancer"). Second-hand smoke, inhaled by non-smokers, increases a person's chance of acquiring lung cancer (Beau Halton). Men who smoke increase their chance of dying from lung cancer about 23 times and women increase their chances 13 times ("Lung Cancer Awareness Campaign," 3/23/99). However, lung cancer may also be caused by long term exposure to radon, a naturally present radioactive gas (SIRS, "What is Cancer?"). The residue of burned petroleum and coal can contribute to lung cancer (Scientific American, "Lung Cancer"). The development of lung cancer seems to be also affected by genes. The gene histidine triad blocks the formation of tumors, so a defective gene could make one more likely to form a tumor (Microsoft, "Lung Cancer"). In the early stages of lung cancer, symptoms are hard to recognize. Symptoms usually include a persistent cough, coughing up blood, weight loss, chest or shoulder pain, swelling in the face or neck, shortness of breath, and a hoarse voice (Microsoft, "Lung Cancer"). Repeated cases of pneumonia, a virus in which the lungs become inflamed, or bronchitis, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bronchia tubes, may be warning signs for lung cancer (Scientific American, "Lung Cancer"). Bone pain, headaches, and dizziness are observations that the lung cancer has spread (Microsoft, "Lung Cancer"). New technology is used on patients when a physician suspects lung cancer. Chest x-rays are used to examine the lungs for tumors (World Book, "Lung Cancer"). A CAT scan, series of x-ray images put together by a computer, is also performed (Scientific American, "Lung Cancer"). During a biopsy, a physician removes a small amount of tissue and examines it. A microscope is used to analyze cells in order to determine whether a tumor is malignant, tending to grow and spread throughout the body (MSKCC, "Lung Cancer"). Treatment depends on the type of lung cancer, the size of the tumor, the location of the tumor, the stage of illness, the age of the patient, and the overall health of the patient (Microsoft, "Lung Cancer). Surgery is performed to remove the tumor if there is no chance that the cancer has spread (Scientific American, "Lung Cancer"). If the disease has spread, then treatment will often include radiation therapy and chemotherapy (MSKCC, "Lung Cancer"). Radiation therapy is based on the use of ionizing radiation to destroy cancerous cells (Microsoft, "Radiology"). Chemotherapy is treatment of a disease using drugs that directly poison the disease organism (Microsoft, "Chemotherapy"). Early stage non-small cell lung cancers are best treated surgically and later stage non-small cell lung cancers are best treated with either chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of the two (Virtual Hospital, 3/23/99). For small cell lung cancers, chemotherapy by itself or with radiation therapy is used instead of surgery (Scientific American "Lung Cancer").
